Construction of the Ha Noi Municipal Theatre was completed in 1911. The edifice lies on irregular-shaped terrain embraced by a garden. The diagonal layout of the surrounding streets highlights the prominent position of the Municipal Theatre. Its facade is suggestive of the Opera Garnier in Paris. The balcony of the opera house is divided by Ionic and Doric columns and flanked by a pavilion on either side.
The long, rectangular building is quite imposing and has no hint of provincialism in its architecture. Its interior is magnificent. The combination of decorative galleries and boxes suspended between solid Corinthian columns gives the impression of harmonious proportions. The auditorium may appear modest, but it can accommodate up to eight hundred people.
